Transport 3: When you take a holiday, do you...

Airliners use a whole lot of fuel — much more for each passenger than trains, buses or even cars — and so they add to pollution. Staying home, walking and cycling uses no fuel at all. Driving in a car obviously uses fuel. Drive a short distance and you use little. Drive across the country and you use hundreds of gallons.

Trains and buses use much less fuel for each person they carry — trains less than buses.

Powerboats burn up fuel big time. The faster they go, the more they use, especially towing waterskiers. As for jetskis, they burn fuel and pollute like powerboats. And like powerboats, they're a big hazard to sea creatures — and human swimmers and divers. These machines also make a lot of noise. Sound travels well under water so all the fish, whales, dolphins and manatees nearby have to put up with the racket, rather like people living near major roads or airports.
